Asking for feedback in a way that actually gets you some

Why 'any tips?' gets you nothing, what the research says about the feedback gap between residents and attendings, and what to ask instead.

  • Attendings consistently believe they give more feedback, sooner and more specifically, than residents believe they get.
  • Feedback is not automatically good for you. In a large meta-analysis, over a third of feedback interventions made performance worse.
  • A named question about one step gives an attending something to answer. 'Any tips?' mostly gets you 'looked good'.
